Sharp rises for travel insurance premiums

Travellers face double-digit rises in their insurance premiums in the new year, with insurers citing rising medical and fraud costs for the increases.

Axa, the country’s largest insurer, is imposing rises on its customers in time for the winter holiday season, with its competitors likely to follow suit in coming months.

“After a difficult year for insurers with the ash cloud, strikes and airline failures, the signs are there that the cost of travel insurance could increase going into 2011,” says Bob Atkinson, travel insurance expert at moneysupermarket.com.

“Some of the single premium policies have already increased in price.”

Axa has not specified which policies will be subjected to the rises but said the increases would reflect its own rising bill for fraud and medical costs.

Unfair discrimination? Pensions are just the start

It’s official: the European Court of Justice does have the power to overrule the laws of nature.

By ruling that higher pension annuity payments for men are unfair “discrimination’ – even though the payments are only higher because they are paid for fewer years than women’s – the court has decided that ideology must take precedence over biology and longevity.

Doubling up policies may raise premiums

Bank customers who claim on insurance provided within packaged current accounts could end up losing their no-claims bonus on other policies.

Most paid-for bank accounts now offer consumers some form of home, travel or motor insurance as an add-on in return for the monthly fee charged for the account.

But for many customers, this insurance is useless. Often consumers have already taken out alternative, and more suitable, policies. This means they are needlessly doubling up their insurance, paying twice for inferior cover.

Not only are consumers paying for insurance they already have, but they could adversely impact both policies if they make a claim on one.
